28,000 new species for image recognition!
10-09-2023 - On September 5th, the latest version of the recognition software (NIA) went live. This enhanced version includes a whopping 28,000 new species! This will be particularly noticeable in Northern and Southern Europe, as well as in the Alps.
NIA is a collaboration between Naturalis Biodiversity Center and Observation.org. Since this version, the model not only uses photos from Observation.org but also material from research institutions in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and the United Kingdom. The best news is that you don't have to do anything to benefit from these improvements. Observation.org, ObsIdentify, and the other apps and portals will automatically switch to the latest NIA version.
Enjoy the enhanced functionality!
GBIF
The Observation.org sightings can now be found on GBIF! With a dataset of more than 71 million observations, collected and validated by many volunteers, we have the 3rd largest dataset on GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility). This dataset contains more than15 million validated photos and is of great value for nature research.
